Excursions and visits
Ypres (optional). Take a stroll around the beautiful town of Ypres. See the market square, overlooked by the dominating medieval Cloth Hall with its impressive 70-metre-high Belfry, or perhaps visit the most important war memorial in Ypres, the Menin Gate. We return to Ostend for an afternoon at leisure, Ostend gained its resort-town popularity from two Belgian kings, Leopold I and II, who faithfully spent every summer here. Take a stroll along the promenade, where you can admire the Royal monuments.
Bruges (included) and Sluis (optional, included on Silver Service). Bruges is Europe’s best-preserved medieval city, and can be explored on foot, with its canals, meandering cobbled lanes and hidden medieval almshouses. Stunning buildings grace the town, including the Gothic clock, town hall and medieval belfry that dominate the main square. From Bruges you have the opportunity to join an afternoon excursion to the fortified town of Sluis, in the rural province of Zeeland, Holland. Discover the rich architecture, elegant shops and cultural heritage, climb Holland’s only bell tower for a spectacular view of the picturesque surrounding countryside, visit the ‘De Brak’ Windmill – or take a walk along the old city ramparts.
Ghent (5-day break only) (included). Affectionately known as the ‘flower capital of Belgium’, this wonderful medieval cobbled Flemish town, with its canals, has a wealth of stunning architecture, including the three impressive towers of St. Nicholas Church, the Belfry and the magnificent St. Baaf’s Cathedral, containing the world-famous 15th-century painting, the Adoration of the Mystic Lamb, by Jan van Eyck. Why not join our optional guided walking sightseeing tour to discover more? We return to Ostend, where the afternoon is left free for you to explore.
