Excursions and visits
Tallinn (included). Our included sightseeing tour, by coach and on foot with an expert local guide, begins in the Upper Town. See Toompea Castle, the Parliament House, Alexander Nevski Cathedral, and the Dome Cathedral – one of the oldest and most important churches in Estonia. Enjoy a picturesque panorama of the Lower Town with its church spires and gables. Continue into the heart of the Old Town, with its historic guild buildings and Art Nouveau houses, Town Hall square, and the old market place.
St. Petersburg (included) and Ballet (optional). An included guided sightseeing tour will introduce you to the famous sights. See Decembrists Square, the Winter Palace, St. Issac’s Cathedral and the Peter and Paul Fortress, which became a notorious prison for revolutionaries. This afternoon is spent at leisure for you to explore St. Petersburg and discover the many other sights which constantly attract visitors. The city is considered to be the birthplace of Russian classical ballet and no visit to St. Petersburg would be complete without a visit to the ballet (optional).
The Hermitage Museum (optional). The Hermitage Museum was once considered by many to be the sole reason for coming to St. Petersburg, and you can’t leave the city without a visit! Made up of six majestic buildings, including the Winter Palace, the museum holds one of the finest ensembles of art, tsarist jewels and treasures in the world.
Petrodvorets (optional). With a magnificent setting on the shores of the Gulf of Finland, and created by Peter the Great, Petrodvorets is Russia’s answer to Versailles. The palace’s magnificent exterior and ornate interior are impressive in themselves, but it is the fabulous grounds here that are truly captivating. Looking out over the Grand Cascade and Water Avenue all the way to the Gulf, the beautiful gardens, pavilions and summerhouses of the beautifully landscaped estate cover some 2,500 acres.
Rail Journey from St. Petersburg to Moscow (included). After dinner on day 6 we transfer to the station for our overnight train journey to Moscow. Please note that the train journey is first class, but the 2-berth couchettes do not have their own private facilities. There is a toilet and wash basin at the end of each carriage.
Moscow (included). We begin with an included guided sightseeing tour to introduce the principal sights and attractions of the city, including Novodevichy Convent, Red Square, the Kremlin, and St. Basil’s Cathedral. Following the tour you will have time at leisure to explore.
The Kremlin and Armoury Museum (optional). As the former residence of the Russian Tsars, and today’s Russian political nerve centre, the Kremlin – a mesmerising complex of towers, domed cathedrals and palaces – offers you an intriguing insight into Russia’s history and a fascinating glimpse at today’s Russia. The Moscow Armoury, the treasury of the Russian Tsars, boasts a unique collection of gold and silver items from the 12th to 19th centuries, Russian arms, the state regalia, thrones, carriages, and coronation dresses of the 16th to 19th centuries.
Please Note: local excursions on this holiday may be subject to minor variations.
